Automatic Speleology is a generative installation work manifested in multi-channel video, sound, robotics, and light. At the heart of Automatic Speleology is an evolving body of music in which hyperkinetic sonic gestures are extended, re-expressed, and modified through video, light, and robotic percussion.

Automatic Speleology, which takes its name from the scientific study of caves, will be at The Warehouse Gallery in Syracuse, NY now through May 29, 2010. The gallery is open 12-6pm Tuesday through Saturday. I also have an installation in the building's front windows that can be experience 24/7 - go to 350 West Fayette Street and you will be robotically colorblasted, all day, every day, amen.

By day, Automatic Speleology is a law-abiding multimedia installation. It wakes up every morning, put its pants on, and runs algorithms - just like you and me. But on certain nights Automatic Speleology goes rogue - alcohol is served, and musical sounds of a distinctly thumping/pounding persuasion are introduced. This naturally has unusual effects on the multichannel video and LED elements of the gallery. Mayhem ensues.

The evening of Thursday, March 25 is the reception/party/party-reception for Automatic Speleology. It will run in gallery mode from 5 to 8pm and will enter FREAKOUT PARTY MODE from 8 to 10pm. Multimedia "DJ Set" by yours truly. BE THERE OR BE HELLACIOUSLY SQUARE.

On the evening of Saturday, May 29 Automatic Speleology will close with a live performance by yours truly and Curtis Bahn. I am especially excited about this, not just because every performance I've ever done with Curtis has shredded my mind into tiny kaleidoscopic pieces, but because Curtis will also be de-installing the show for me. Curtis has informed me of his plan to sonically tear the video projections, LEDs, robots, and paint off the walls. With his sitar. Good times!

In a darkened room, a large luminous orb pulses amid radial tendrils of audio-responsive LED's. Sounds and colors unfold an abstract narrative in which senses and forms are united in a gradual arc of elemental tones and visual rhythms. Cascading patterns of color and melody flow throughout the installation space as video paintings are projected from within the luminous orb.

In 2009 Chris Harvey, Olivia Robinson, and Jesse Stiles created The Harmonic Center of the Universe, a sonified light-emitting sculpture. For Roullette's annual Mixology festival Harvey, Robinson, and Stiles will exhibit and perform the sculpture, LIVE. It's all going down Monday, May 10, 2010 at 8:30 in the PM.

PAY for the whole orb, but you'll only need THE EDGE*. Roulette is located here.

TECHNICAL DRAWINGS - AS OF YET UNTITLED DEBUT LP

Technical Drawings are a hyper-modified percussion duo comprised of Melissa St Pierre on prepared electric piano and Jesse Stiles on real-time drum algorithms and digital signal processing. They incorporate a diverse set of influences - Konono No 1 meet Phillipe Manoury at a carnivalesque gamelan ceremony. They utilise a vibrant sound palette ranging from the physical (rusted bolts, pencil erasers, melted coins) to the digital (custom software, hacked electronics).

Technical Drawings debut LP is forthcoming on Gagarin Records in in 2010 - vinyl/digital. In the meantime Technical Drawings has a track on the Tapper CD included in the current issue of The Wire (The Wire Tapper 23, track 10). Yes!

JESSE STILES - THE TARGET MUSEUM

At long last! Spring 2010! 12" picture disc plus digital download. STAY TUNED.

Pax et lux,
Jesse
